Hey guys, I have spoken about this book on my blog about three times now. There is a perfectly good reason for that: it was amazing.
Only Ever Yours was my ‘out of my comfort zone’ book for the TBRTakedown,
The novel follows freida (un capitalised because she is an eve (artificial woman)) in the School. All women are artificially made and only boys can be naturally birthed. The School rears the perfectly dsesigned girls into womanhood however, ‘there is always room for improvement.’
The girls battle it out to be the #1 eve so they can be chosen by the best Inheritant and have the best life they can.
Although these girls have grown up together they are constantly competing, not academically (girls should not be intelligent) but aesthetically. The girls should all be within a target weight and look a certain weight, so they dont end up as Chastities or Concubines (thirds they do not want to be in,) but instead as Companions.
The battle for companionship leads our protagonists into loads of issues. We see her and her fellow eves dealing with body shaming, sexism, bullying, depression, homosexuality and loss. Strangely and worryingly, these issues really related to those of myself and today’s society and it was a massive eyeopener.
The book was such a rollercoaster of emotion! It was so unpredictable and O’Neill’s writing was beautiful. I still cannot get over the ending and the issues in this book.
